What are floorcloths?
Floorcloths are simply area rugs made of canvas. Yes, you really can walk
on them, provided they are on a hard surface. Originally, floorcloths were
sections of torn sail that were hemmed. As the story goes sailors would
take them home to cover their dirt floors. Over time they evolved, stenciling
them became popular. The first patent for decorative floorcloths was granted
in 1578. They were produced in floorcloth factories in England and the New
England states, but with the advent of linoleum, floorcloths died out.
About the artist.
Sue Bleyaert has been making floorcloths since 1989. She has a Bachelor
Of Fine Arts. She has explored many mediums but floorcloths gave her the
opportunity to create a product that is decorative and functional. She
has participated in many shows and exhibits throughout the US. She received
the "Best of Show" award in the National Floorcloths Exhibition
in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is featured "The Complete Book
Of Floorcloths". She offers an endless variety of beautiful and imaginative
floorcloths.

The urethane and paints that are produced today contribute to the durability
of her floorcloths. Like anything you value, if you take care of it, it
will last. Durable, functional and highly artistic, floorcloths are a
unique way to enhance living areas.
